TODAY'S MUSLIM[MUSALMAN]

WE are the world,’ is the voice of today’s young minds। They are comfortable with every thing of today and welcome the changes open heartedly. Religion is absolutely no bar. It is not that only a Christian or American drink or enjoys night out often and not the youth of other religions.

Gone are those days when we heard such news. Now, it is same with everyone. More to join this genre are the Muslims. Yes, in the present day of globalisation and westernisation, where everything is getting influenced and adapted, Muslims are not far behind. They are more of Muslims in every crime and hoax we find around us these days.

Now, more than ever, the youth is often regarded as the source of society’s challenges and deficits. Who is responsible for all these – the parents, teachers or the youth themselves who are away from the true knowledge of the world? The underage drinking, drugs, sexual preferences and violence is what we find in the youth today

The decency and simple life of Prophet, the messenger of Allah is out of the brains and what is left is the new western culture. There are less of prayers (Ibadat) more of music in the houses. We are not addicted to reading the Holy Quran but are hooked onto the new gadgets. The Muslims have undoubtedly changed from years and they welcome every change for the sake of entertainment and pleasure. It is all about making life’s simple and easy they say. But no they are heading life towards a baffled world where they are left muddle up.

I have seen many young men and women walk down parks and green lanes with earphones and portable music systems or cell phones, completely shutting out from the world. They don’t care of anyone or everyone. The lifestyle they portrays is only night outs, lounging in the pubs, tapping feet to the rocking music in discs, showing off 8 GB I-pods; N-Series mobiles, the latest bike, Levis jeans and Woodland shoes are the common lifestyle of the urban youth today. All these ’cool stuffs’ are essentials, if they don’t have it, then it will affect their ‘so called image’ in college campus or their common hang-outs. This is the youth of today – unorganised with limited outlook and lack of aim in life.
The youth has forgotten that praying five times is a good exercise than any other weight loosing machines. A simple morning walk is better and outdoor games are much more vigilant than video games available in mobile phones and computers. No doubt, they are useful to us but Possessions and acquisitions may seem marvelous. But after a while, you do not own them, they own you.
The youth is getting a raw deal from the media, its entertainment industries and fashion designers who are said to be responsible to have created an image containing a more negative look for our youth occupying sexuality, violence, coarser language and revealing clothing. It is this which makes young minds turn to terrorist and cheat themselves in the name of religion. Is this true or another typecast question or anything else?

It won’t be anonymous to say that today the life has become a puzzle to many who doesn’t understand what is right and what is incorrect. They just move with the money. . It is not long ago India had several terror attacks and it is the youth behind every threat. It is only because they are confused. They don’t follow their heart but do what is wanted by others. ‘Anything for money’ is the new slogan of every person.

We see these days youngsters running for IT jobs in spite of market being down, pink slips on rise. Everyone is ready to crush their minds for American labor. They are ready to miss the ‘good night sleep of five-six days in a week and have snaps in the day but do their jobs honestly. There is a negative perception of this vibrant segment of our society, the American Muslim youth who work for America, abroad return or holding American visas have to cope with threat of terrorism. Muslim youth often find themselves in unfriendly environments within their own communities, where activities and programs are not relevant to their needs, where their opinion doesn’t count. They have to face the stereotype questions and where their voice is seldom heard.
What’s wrong with today’s youth is that the parent’s are more interested in being their kids ‘friend’ then being a parent. And this leaves them with more of freedom irrationally to do things they wish and every wrong becomes good as they feel of it being wanted. Wants are always unlimited. There is no limit to them. But it is important to fulfill the needs not wants. Today parents have no control over kids rather the kids control them.

The recent beaten up girl by people in Mangalore pubs is no good to hear such a harsh humiliation from India. The women is said to be garment of men who is treated in inhuman way for catching up in pubs. Who is to blame here? Girls say they are above 18 and independent to hang out with guys and party at pub or whatever. The society has become more violent than it was, and young people are pushed towards adulthood faster than they were. This is Americanism not Indian’s or Islam.

The Muslims of today have left behind the religious books and teachings of Prophets and live life wishfully, which is becoming more perplexed than ever. It is only we the youth responsible for all. Unless the Muslim youth realise that they are moving in a wrong direction, nothing can be done. There is a need to take initiative by every parent, every teacher to nurture best of religion and humanism in the mind of children so that they inherit the best of values which can only help us to see a better and change tomorrow in the coming years.

Russian singer Masha is now muslim! Jenifer lopez also accepted Islam?

A very famous Russian singer and actress recently became Muslim (true) by the name of Masha Alalykina। Sister Masha is basically in the same boat as Jennifer Lopez in regards to the Russian world and has actually accepted Islam. She is a real testimony that people can change no matter what state of life they are in – people can become righteous no matter how bad and sinful they were.

Alalykina is a real example of this change, of repentance, and should be taken as a role model for the world of entertainment. She broke away from the way that rich white (mostly Jewish) men used her as a sex object and embraced the hijab at all odds. I advise all to look into her story – especially those in the entertainment world. I pray that more people follow her footsteps and realize that there is more to life than just eating, drinking, and sleeping.

Jennifer Lopez, the famous Latina actress and singer has recently accepted the Islamic faith. She said that she was tired of her previous life – a life full of corruption and sin. She took her shahadah (this means she bore witness that there is no God save Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger) on June 24th, 2008 at the Hejrat Foundation in Los Angeles, California stating that Islam is a way of life that can bring someone out of the darkness of a life full of sin and into the light of a life full of spirituality.

Did this really happen? No, but it could have.

A LETTER TO OBAMA

Dear President Obama,

I was very much moved by your letter when you described in intricate details the Haitian earthquake: collapsed hospitals, crumbled homes, and men and women carrying their injured…. Are truly heart – wrenching. As we learn more about the extent of the devastation, our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti and Haitian Americans around our country who do not yet know the fate of their families and loved ones back home.

All know, this is an act of God, and I believe this is God’s will. However, I cannot but remember Gaza, where the destruction is manmade, deliberate, and brutal, and where crimes are still being committed, by Israel imposed siege, walls, and wars, in which American supplied weapons are misused, to create havoc, destruction, and death. The State of Israel is acting with impunity, as a wild beast and out of control, subjecting the entire Gaza strip population of 1.5 millions, to starvation and death. The State of Israel have used US arms on unarmed civilians, in violation of International Law, and US Arm Export Laws that forbids the misuse of such weapons. Your policy of appeasement with Israel will destroy all peace in the Middle East, and will make the surge of fanaticism and extremism a reality that will endanger all the world.

No kind words were ever expressed directly or indirectly, by you or any representative of the Administration, to console the mothers and the families of those victims in Gaza and the West Bank, that Israel killed in cold blood, where many survivors saw in their own eyes, Israel's merciless ferocity against their loved ones, some of whom were hounded, herded, imprisoned in compounds, schools, mosques, churches, hospitals, and their own homes, only to be mass murdered, by a ruthless, and racist Israeli regime that strive on deceit and robberies of land they occupy, confiscate, and ravage.

As you have stated at the end of your letter Mr. President: “We will continue to stand with the people of Haiti,” I hope you will have the strength and the courage to stand with the people of Gaza who are still suffering from Israel barbaric siege and crimes. I hope you will take immediate action and force Israel to allow much needed simple basic food, medicine, and water to enter Gaza. Please remember to Keep Gaza suffering in your thoughts and prayers.

Remember we the people who supported you are still awaiting your miraculous change, to address Palestinians need, for justice, liberty and freedom. As Palestinian Americans with many relatives living in Gaza, we are concerned and wondering why your administration are not helping Gaza; they are humans who are suffering like those in Haiti.

Please act now; no time for delay

Respectfully Yours

Hamza El Alami

[This letter was sent to the President of the US,in regard to Israel continuing siege on Gaza. I hope all will contact the Whit House and urge for an immediate action to lift Israel brutal siege on Gaza, and an end to the occupation of the West Bank.]

Moral stories...through HADEES

Hijab is not a piece of cloth on your head

Just because some of the sisters have their head covered, they think that the requirement of Hijaab is fulfilled. They don’t realize that wearing a Hijaab requires much more than just covering your head.

Actually, if you think about it, Hijaab is the way you talk…..the way you walk….the very way you carry yourself. In fact, Hijaab is an attitude in itself. Its a whole way of life.

Allaah says:

And say to the believing women to lower their gazes, and to guard their private parts, and not to display their beauty (zeenah) except what is apparent of it, and to extend their headcoverings (khimars) to cover their bosoms (jaybs), and not to display their beauty except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband's fathers, or their sons, or their husband's sons, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their womenfolk, or what their right hands rule (slaves), or the followers from the men who do not feel sexual desire, or the small children to whom the nakedness of women is not apparent, and not to strike their feet (on the ground) so as to make known what they hide of their adornments. And turn in repentance to Allah together, O you believers, in order that you are successful. (Surat-un-Nur: 31).

Here are some of the more common issues in light of this verse about the Hijaab.

Well, my head is covered. What more do you want?

If you look carefully at the ayah, it clearly states that the head covers (khumur) should be drawn over the neck slits (juyoob). Khumur is the plural of the Arabic word "khimar" which means a headcover. Juyoob is the plural of the Arabic word "jaiyb", which refers to the neck slit (of the dress).

Yet, some sisters just cover their head with something, and think they are fulfilling the rights of Hijaab, although part of their hair or body is showing, or their whole neck and chest area are exposed. Actually, that was the way of the women of Jahilliyah.
Al-Qurtubi said: "Women in those days used to cover their heads with the khimar, throwing its ends upon their backs. This left the neck and the upper part of the chest bare, along with the ears. Then Allah commanded them to cover those parts with the khimar."
So secure the scarf well around your face, covering your neck/chest area, and keep those half sleeves and capri pants for your Mahrams

Sorry.…tight jeans and short shirt just don’t cut it

You can’t wear tight jeans and a short shirt with a piece of cloth on your head and think this is Hijaab. Nor can you wear anything else that is tight, describing the shape of the body in any way, even if it is long. The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said:
"In later (generations) of my ummah there will be women who will be dressed but naked. On top of their heads (what looks) like camel humps. They will not enter into paradise or (even) get a smell of it." (Muslim)

If it is see-through, its NOT Hijaab
You CANNOT use chiffon or other see through material to cover your hair and body. Everything should be covered and the color of the skin underneath should not be visible.

The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) once received a thick garment as a gift. He gave it to Osamah b. Zayd, who in turn gave it to his wife. When asked by the Prophet why he did not wear it, Osamah indicated that he gave it to his wife. The Prophet then said to Osamah "ask her to use a "gholalah" under it (the garment) for I fear that it (the garment) may describe the size of her bones." (Ahmad, Abi-Dawood)

(The word gholalah in Arabic means a thick fabric worn under the dress to prevent it from describing the shape of the body).

The Hijaab shouldn’t attract attention
The dress should not be such that it attracts men's attention to the woman's beauty. Allaah clearly states "not to display their beauty (zeenah)." Yet, Subhaan Allaah, some Hijaabi sisters are dressed in such a way that they attract more attention to themselves than they would if they didn’t wear Hijaab!! How could such zeenah be concealed if the dress is designed in a way that it attracts men's eyes to the woman? It beats the purpose of Hijaab.

Allaah tells us: "And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves like that of the times of ignorance…" [al-Ahzaab:32]

What about make-up and perfume???

Wearing make up is also part of the zeenah that Allaah orders us NOT to display. So if your head and body are appropriately covered yet you are wearing bright red lipstick or dark eyeliner such that people confuse between you and a raccoon….uh sorry, that’s not Hijaab. And keep those nice fragrances for the home, between you and your husband. That’s part of Hijaab too, even if you are going to the Masjid. The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "Any woman who puts on perfume and passes by people so that they can smell her fragrance, is an adulteress." (al-Nasaa’i, Tirmidhi: hasan by Albaani)

Tinkling Jewelry and Jingling bracelets

‘Loud’ and tinkling anything, be it jewelry, bracelets, clip-clopping shoes, little bells on clothes, you name it, if it jingles or makes noise, it is against the principles of Hijaab, because it attracts attention to the one wearing it. That is what is meant when Allaah orders us in the above verse…"not to strike their feet (on the ground) so as to make known what they hide of their adornments."

No laughing, joking, or hanging out with non-Mahrams

Some sisters assume that since they are properly covered, its okay for them to sit around and talk, laugh, joke, etc. with the men, but that’s not right, even if he is ‘the Shaikh’. Allaah says:". . . then be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease should be moved with desire, but speak in an honorable manner." [al-Ahzaab:32]

So talk to them when there is a specific need, and in a manner that is not necessarily rude, yet it is polite but firm.

Staring at the brothers or ‘checking them out’ is NOT Hijaab

Allaah orders us to "lower your gaze" in the above verse. Why? Because a single ‘look’ can say more than a thousand words. So, even if you are properly covered, keep those eyes down, conduct yourself with ‘Hayaa’, and avoid ‘fitnah’.

‘Chatting’ on the internet/phone is not part of Hijaab, either

There is no such thing as "we’re just friends". Talking to non-Mahrams is wrong even if it is through the internet or telephone. There are too many stories of illegal relationships, fornications, broken homes, extra-marital affairs and runaway brides to even mention. That is why in Islam anything that leads to haraam is also haraam. Allaah says:

"Do not (even) come close to fornication, for it is an indecency, and its way is evil." (Surah Israa:32)

Be careful, even in the way you walk

Remember, you are not a runway model displaying the latest fashion. Walk with modesty and hayaa and you will be respected. The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said:

"There are two types of the people of Hell that I have not seen yet….women who are clothed yet naked, walking with an enticing gait….." (Muslim).
Don’t shake hands with non-Mahrams. Its part of Hijaab

It is not permissible to shake hands with a non-Mahram, because the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "For one of you to be stabbed in the head with an iron needle is better for him than to touch a woman who is not permissible for him." (at-Tabaraani saheeh by al-Albaani).

And no, it is not rude to refuse to shake hands with non-Muslims. Simply politely explain that its part of your religion and they are very understanding.

Stay away from the men’s areas

I see many sisters entering the Masjid from the men’s entrance, or standing idle in the hallways or where there is a chance of unnecessary mixing with the brothers. What for?
Don’t we have a separate entrance for ourselves? Why do you think Allaah ordained the Hijaab in the first place? To avoid fitnah, by reducing temptation and separating the genders.

"
The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said to the women on his way out of the mosque when he saw men and women mixing together on their way home: ‘Give way (i.e., walk to the sides) as it is not appropriate for you to walk in the middle the road.’ Thereafter, women would walk so close to the wall that their dresses would get caught on it." (Abu Dawood)

Hijaab is also to conceal your sister

Although some sisters wear the Hijaab themselves, they forget that they cannot talk about another sister and her beauty in front of their own husbands, brothers, etc. Remember, part of your Hijaab is to cover your sisters ‘awrah’ as well.
The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "No woman should mix with a woman and describe her to her husband so that it is as if he can see her." (Muslim)
